2005 will see the creation and release of three groundbreaking films that form a new series of films, Realities & Real Ties, by award winning filmmaker/poet Seth-Adrian Harris.
This series is focused on ideas of movement and a premise that the history of humankind is a history of migration. The first in the series of fresh flicks, is Movin’ Up The Railroad (April 2005). This film is an exquisite fusion of poetry, dance, and interviews, where Seth-Adrian Harris gives an artful documentary that explores differentiation versus separation as it pertains to the history and culture of Black communities in rural southern Ontario.
Following Movin’ Up The Railroad will be the screening of When Moses Woke: A Harriet Tubman Dream (August 2005). When Moses Woke is a one-hour devotional performance drama that reveals the undercurrents of the historical Afro-Canadian/American heroine, Harriet Tubman. Drawing from actual events during the triumphant life of Harriet Tubman, the film focuses on the fact that she was prone to sudden drifts of sleep and manifests this aspect of her person through an atavistic weaving of dream sequences that articulate her mental, physical, and spiritual journey on the Underground Railroad.
The final piece in the series of films is called Futa. (November 2005). This is a one-hour poetic documentary that follows Seth-Adrian’s journey from the Citizenship Office in Toronto where he says his oath after being in Canada for over 25 years, then into a cab and onto a plane that lands in West Africa. Throughout Futa, there is a theme of “rituals” as it pertains to three very distinct segments of the journey. These segments are, rites of citizenship, middle passage, and rituals of manhood.
In all, these three films make up a powerful and personal rendering of motion, passion, and resilience, making Seth-Adrian Harris’ Realities & Real Ties series a must see triumph in Afro-Canadian cinema.
